How much impact does your leader have on your mental health?

A study released earlier this year from UKG shared some surprising workforce trends. The first statistic that stood out to me was: “Managers impact employees’ mental health (69%) more than doctors (51%) or therapists (41%) — and even the same as a spouse or partner (69%).”

Additional key Insights:

Managers impact employees’ mental health (69%) more than doctors (51%) or therapists (41%) — and even the same as a spouse or partner (69%).

More than 80% of employees would rather have good mental health than a high-paying job.

Two-thirds of employees would take a pay cut for a job that better supports their mental wellness — and 70% of managers would, too.

Work stress negatively impacts employees’ home life (71%), wellbeing (64%), and relationships (62%).

40% of the C-suite says they will likely quit within the year because of work-related stress.

Leaders…I implore you to have a healthy sense of self awareness. We went through a lot in the last 3 years and some people have come to the realization that these types of roles are just too much for them. Not everyone in a leadership role is a great leader, but there is a distinct difference between being a leader who is responsible with their power and someone who is irresponsible with their power.

We cannot forget that with great power comes great responsibility and that can be really difficult at times. However, leaders owe it to their people to serve them well. That doesn’t mean to not push back, disagree, challenge, have heated debate, or hold them accountable. It actually means ALL of those things alongside supporting them.

The article goes on to say “The C-suite is not immune to challenges, either. A surprising 33% of C-level leaders say, “I don’t want to work anymore,” and the younger the leader, the more they agree with that statement. In fact, a whopping 40% of the C-suite says they will likely quit in the next 12 months due to work-related stress.”

And yet, we wonder why we are having a rising percentage of turnover in executives.

We must not lose sight of self care and raising your hand when YOU need some help. It’s ok to not be ok sometimes.

Looking for ways to become more productive and better manage your time?

Check out these 3 powerful tips to refine your productivity & time management:

1. Get clear on your priorities: Make a to-do list of tasks that need to be accomplished and prioritize them according to their importance. Science tells us no more than 3-5 things should be on the “must complete” list. interestingly enough, studies show that 41% of our to do list doesn’t ever get accomplished. Keeping your eye on the most important items helps in avoiding distractions and staying focused on those critical tasks.

2. Delegate : Look…I am a self proclaimed “control enthusiast”, but delegating changes the game. (Cue Frozen soundtrack🎶 Let it go, let it go🎶) Identify things that can be delegated to others who have the necessary skills and expertise. Delegating tasks can save oodles of time and enable you to focus on higher value tasks.

3. Use technology to your advantage: Use technology tools such as email management apps, project management software, and calendar apps to stay organized and manage time efficiently. They were created to solve these very challenges…or at least make the process smoother. These tools can help in keeping track of deadlines, scheduling meetings, and collaborating with team members.

Let me know what you would add to this list.

A quote I’ve been sitting with this week:

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
