Is leadership an inborn trait or can it be developed?

Are You a Born Leader or a Made Leader?

Leadership is one of those topics that everyone has an opinion on. Some people think that leaders are born with a special gene that gives them the edge over others. Others believe that leaders are made through hard work, learning, and experience. But what does the science say? Is leadership nature or nurture?

On the nature side of the coin: The nature side argues that leadership is a genetic trait that some people inherit from their parents. They point to studies that show that some personality traits, such as extraversion, openness, and conscientiousness, are linked to leadership potential. They also cite examples of famous leaders who seem to have a natural charisma and talent for leading, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Oprah Winfrey.

Phew…talk about a list of dynamic leaders.

On the nurture side of the coin: The nurture side contends that leadership is a skill that can be developed and improved over time. They point to studies that show that leadership can be learned through training, mentoring, and feedback. They also cite examples of successful leaders who rose from humble beginnings or overcame challenges, such as Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, and Steve Jobs.

So, what is the verdict? Who is right?

The answer is both. Leadership is not a simple either-or question. It is a complex combination of nature and nurture. Research suggests that both genetic and environmental factors influence leadership potential. Some people may have a natural advantage, but that does not guarantee success. Others may have to work harder, but that does not mean they cannot achieve greatness. Leadership is not a fixed trait that you either have or don’t have. It is a dynamic process that you can shape and grow throughout your life.

So, whether you are a born leader or a made leader, the important thing is to keep learning, keep improving, and keep leading.

Leadership isn’t an elite club that only some get into. It is available to everyone, if you are willing to be a student. Study those you respect and admire. Learn the incredibly valuable lessons of what type of leader you don’t want to be.

You have the power to make a difference in the world. You have the power to be an example for others.

Well, what are you waiting for?

A quote that I've been sitting with this week:

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
