How to Strengthen Your Executive Presence Muscle

Have you ever watched someone be able to work a room, navigate a conversation, or even be in the hot seat with ease and and you wonder how they did it so skillfully and comfortably? Here are some ways to build that same kind of muscle.

1. Be the thermostat, not the thermometer: Possess the kind of self awareness that allows you to read a room and influence it. A thermostat sets the temperature of the room whereas a thermometer adjusts to the temperature of the room.
2. Communicate clearly and effectively: Be able to tailor your communication style to your audience. Having clarity and confidence in how you to give direction, express ideas and make decisions allows others to have confidence in taking your direction and executing accordingly.
3. Have Composure: Be able to manage stress, stay calm under pressure, and maintain a level head in difficult situations. It is okay to get heated at times, so long as it remains controlled.
4. Build your credibility: Credibility is essential because it involves being trustworthy, knowledgeable, and reliable, which helps to establish respect and influence among those around you.
5. Check your ego at the door: Get over the need to be right or get all of the credit. Pass the kudos around to the team and highlight what others are doing.

Becoming skillful with these traits takes practice. You have to put in the reps. This means you will flub and flop a number of times…but you will take account of what happened in each of these situations and figure out where it could’ve gone differently. Having a growth mindset allows you to remain open to what you can do differently allows you to learn and refine how you are showing up. Few people have the ability to do all of this without practicing. Don’t try to fake it or go off the cuff, rather put in the time, effort and thoughtfulness to practice. Ask for feedback and be open to what you hear. Not only will you continue growing, you will be an example for those around you.

Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, receives the thumbs up by the FDA to begin testing in humans

I was fascinated with the news that broke last week around the FDA’s clearance for Neuralink to begin testing it’s implantable device on humans. With all of the talk on the rapid advancement of AI and how that could positively and negatively impact our world, this kind of blows that out of the water.

Here are some highlights from the article linked below:

“Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company Neuralink has received its go signal from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test and implant its AI brain-reading wearable device to people for its first-in-human clinical study. In a Twitter post, the Neuralink team states that the news comes through as the result of incredible work by its team in close collaboration with the FDA and that it ‘represents an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people.”

“Neuralink is set to install advanced, low-power chips and electronics process neural signals into the device that can transmit information from the brain to the dedicated app to enable decoding of the gathered data from the brain. It can then help assess the controls the user wants to happen as the chips read the signals coming from the neurons, and with the FDA’s approval, the device’s hopeful effectiveness can be recorded.

The implant has 1,024 electrodes distributed across 64 threads that record the brain activities, and the flexible, ultra-thin threads, as the company claims, minimize damage during implantation. The wearable device, planted on the back of a person’s ear to read the signals injected into the person’s neural nerve cells, is equipped with a small battery and with wireless charging to allow the user to bring and charge it anywhere.

The company says that it is ‘focused on giving people with quadriplegia the ability to control their devices with their thoughts’.”

A quote that I've been sitting with this week:

“Excellence can be achieved only today—not yesterday or tomorrow, because they do not exist in the present moment. Today is the only day you have to flex your talents and maximize your enjoyment. Your challenge is to win in all aspects of life. To reach that goal, you need to set yourself up for success by winning one day at a time. Procrastination is no match for a champion.”
