Competence + Character + Connection = Influence

Competence refers to your ability to get things done. It is the foundation of your credibility and the reason why people trust you. When you are competent, you know your stuff and can deliver results. You have the skills, knowledge, and experience to tackle any challenge that comes your way. It is your “street cred” and this makes people feel confident in your abilities and makes them more likely to listen to your ideas.

Character is the second key factor when it comes to influencing others. It refers to your integrity, honesty, and values. People want to follow someone they can trust, and that means having a strong moral compass. When you have a good character, you do what you say you will do, and you don't compromise your principles for personal gain. This builds trust and respect and makes people more willing to support your vision.

Connection is the third critical factor in influencing others. This is your ability to build relationships and connect with people on a personal level. When you can relate to others, understand their needs and motivations, and communicate in a way that resonates with them, you can influence them more effectively. This means taking the time to listen, empathize, and build rapport.

These are some of the essential strands that make up the fiber of an authentically influential person.

Influencing others is a crucial skill that can help you both personally and professionally. Whether you are trying to persuade someone to buy a product or service, support your cause or simply follow your lead, it all comes down to three key factors: competence, character, and connection.

Tell me something good 🎵🎶🎵🎶

With all that is going on in the world today, this is a weekly opportunity for us to share something good that has happened to us recently. Seriously. If you respond to this email, you get me. I’d love to hear from you!

Jimmy Darts does it again…

I’ve talked about Jimmy Darts before. He is a social media maven with millions of followers known for helping people and using his platform to raise money for people in need. It’s really all done through the generosity of his followers as they are the donors.

This is Junior and even though he was experiencing homelessness, he offered to fix Jimmy’s tire for free. As he shares his story, he says “I’ve been in prison and prison compares nothing to the loneliness and mainly knowing how uncomfortable you make people…”

I hope this hit you in the gut and heart as much as it did me. It gives a very different perspective about the homeless population. It humanizes their experience and makes it personal.

Jimmy proceeds to give him $500.00, take him to get some clean clothes, a haircut, some food and a few days in a hotel room to get cleaned up and have a bed to sleep in. His followers came in clutch when they donated $44,000

He goes back the next day to share this with Junior. Through tears, he says “I don’t know what I did to deserve this”.

Don’t let this lesson of humanity and humility get lost on you.

Challenge for the week: Pick 1 or do both:

  1. Let this be an opportunity to change your perspective about those who are unhoused as humans instead of just someone looking for money for booze or drugs. Stop and ask about someone’s story this week. You might be surprised at what you find out.

  2. Volunteer in a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. Go a step further and encourage your family to come along and serve alongside of you.

Making someone else smile is contagious enough to cause a smile on your face as well. When you smile, your brain releases dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. These neurotransmitters are associated with lowering your anxiety and increasing feelings of happiness. That is a win-win!

A quote that I've been sitting with this week:

“The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That's what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they'll go through the pain no matter what happens.”
