Is your leadership in a drought?

In Arizona, we have had quite the drought over the last couple of years. Our desert landscape had become brown and dry. You would think all of the bushes and brush, at a glance, were dead.

We have had some incredible rainfall. On my hike this morning there are signs of life coming up all over the mountain, even little plants springing up from beneath and between the rocks.

Does any of that resonate with how you’ve felt over the last year or couple of years? Like you have formed a rocky exterior, that at a glance, seems a little lifeless?

It’s amazing what happens when you work to enrich your own “soil”. Maybe that is by moving the dial on your leadership, knowledge or area of expertise, or maybe it is focusing on your mental, physical, or financial heath.

Where you spend time and energy is where you will see some new “life” spring up.

So, what is the area you want to focus on?

Lessons learned by watching my husband in action

We are so accustomed to immediate gratification. Getting what we want as fast as possible.

I was reminded of the process this weekend as we were up in the mountains given deer hunting season just opened up. There is nothing quick about hunting. It takes patience and skill. Scouting ahead of time to see what is out there and where, gauging behaviors and patterns.

My husband loves the process. Admittedly, I don’t know if I could do it…the patience part. He typically goes out alone and then returns to camp at some point during he day. We went out with him in the truck one of the days to look around and spotted several deer that were 200+ yards away.

He got out and I continued to drive up the mountain, slowly. He slowly trekked through the forest. Stopping, watching, assessing, and progressing ahead. Eventually, he just disappeared into the trees, blending in with his surroundings. It was pretty awesome to see him in action.

What if we all took a little more time as we were moving towards our goals and desires. What if we didn’t just charge ahead at 100 miles an hour? What if we didn’t quit the first time we missed our target? Don’t ever forget that recalibration can be the most important part of the process.

Readjust your sites just a bit and, if needed, change direction because your target moved ever so slightly.

A quote that I've been sitting with this week

This is my life…my story...my book. I will no longer let anyone else write it; nor will I apologize for the edits I make.
